RTPU Economiser Kit
Installation, Wiring and ECO Mode Programming
An economiser uses controlled outside-air and return-air dampers to introduce suitable outside air for cooling, reducing reliance on mechanical refrigeration when operating conditions permit.
1. Economiser Kit Selection
The following optional kit references are taken from the supplied PREMIUM quick reference workbook.
| Applicable Models | Economiser Kit |
|---|---|
| PREMIUM15 | KIT-15-ECO |
| PREMIUM17 | KIT-17-ECO |
| PREMIUM110 / PREMIUM112 | KIT-110-112-ECO |
| PREMIUM115 / PREMIUM118 / PREMIUM120 | KIT-115-118-ECO |
| PREMIUM224 / PREMIUM230 / PREMIUM234 | KIT-224-230-ECO |
| PREMIUM236 / PREMIUM238 | KIT-236-ECO |
The workbook lists the same kit families for the corresponding R454B commercial models. Confirm the full model, installation configuration and current kit compatibility before ordering.
2. Mechanical Installation
The supplied RAQ-118 ECO installation document illustrates the following procedure. The general method may assist with other sizes, but the actual mechanical arrangement and dimensions must be confirmed against the relevant kit instructions.
Step 1 – Prepare Fresh Air Opening
- Isolate the unit and ensure it is safe to work on.
- Remove the fresh-air infill panel.
- The RAQ-118 installation example identifies 10 panel bolts.
- Expose and inspect the louvre-box mounting opening.
Step 2 – Install Fresh Air Louvre Box
- Apply the specified adhesive insulation tape to the louvre box.
- Align the box with the fresh-air opening.
- Mark and trim interfering insulation so the box mounts flush.
- Secure using the supplied fixing arrangement.
- The RAQ-118 example specifies six external hex-head self-tapping screws.
Step 3 – Install Outside-Air Thermistor
- Identify a suitable sensor position in the fresh-air louvre box.
- The RAQ-118 example uses an 8 mm mounting hole approximately 300 mm from the top on the left side.
- Fit and secure the NTC10k thermistor.
- Route the sensor lead away from moving damper parts and possible cable damage.
Step 4 – Install Return Air Louvre Box
- Prepare the return-air opening.
- The RAQ-118 procedure describes removing 10 existing flange rivets.
- Position and secure the return-air louvre assembly.
- Fit and tighten the required fixing screws.
- Check that both dampers operate freely.
3. Damper Motor Direction
| Damper | Y=0 Motor Setting |
|---|---|
| Fresh Air | Clockwise (Right) |
| Return Air | Anticlockwise (Left) |
These positions are documented in the supplied economiser installation example. Verify that the installed dampers travel in the correct direction and are not obstructed.
4. Economiser Wiring
Outside-Air Temperature Sensor
The supplied wiring procedure identifies the following terminals:
| Connection | Function |
|---|---|
| X1-189 and X1-190 | Outside-air NTC10k sensor |
| X1-103 and X1-104 | Return-air temperature sensor |
Procedure: Remove the existing 10 kOhm resistor from X1-189 and X1-190 and terminate the economiser NTC10k outside-air sensor to those terminals.
Damper Motor Wiring
The RAQ-118 installation document identifies three damper motor extension connections:
| X1-181 | Damper motor connection 181 |
| X1-182 | Damper motor connection 182 |
| X1-183 | Damper motor connection 183 |
The installation example joins three conductors at each corresponding connection through the supplied junction-box arrangement.
Route and secure all cables using suitable cable glands and protection. Prevent contact with moving components, sharp cabinet edges and unsuitable heat sources.
5. Enabling Economiser Mode
The Danfoss controller must be programmed to recognise the outside-air sensor and enable economiser control.
MENU → LOGIN → PARAMETERS → ROOFTOP → EXTERNAL DAMPER → CONFIGURATION
Locate Enable FreeCoolHeating and change the setting from NO to TEMP.
- Confirm the outside-air sensor has been correctly installed and wired.
- Enter the controller's authorised service login.
- Navigate to Parameters, Rooftop, External Damper.
- Open Configuration.
- Select the free cooling/heating enable parameter.
- Change NO to TEMP.
- Save the parameter as required by the controller.
- Verify outside-air temperature and damper response.
Access note: The supplied ECO addendum uses Level 2 access (3000), while Commissioning Guide V1.4 describes a Level 3 login for economiser programming. Required access may depend on the controller/software configuration. Use the access level authorised for the installed controller.
6. Minimum Fresh-Air Opening
The commissioning guide identifies the following menu path:
MENU → LOGIN → PARAMETERS → ROOFTOP → EXTERNAL DAMPER → CONFIGURATION → MINIMUM OPENING
The guide states that the fresh-air and return-air dampers operate together. Its example is:
| Fresh Air Damper | Return Air Damper |
|---|---|
| 20% | 80% |
This illustrates the complementary damper operation described in the commissioning guide. The actual minimum fresh-air requirement must be determined for the building design and applicable ventilation requirements.
7. Economiser Troubleshooting
| Issue | Initial Checks |
|---|---|
| Economiser not enabled | Confirm NO has been changed to TEMP in controller configuration. |
| Outside-air temperature incorrect | Inspect NTC10k sensor, wiring and terminals 189/190. |
| Fresh-air damper does not respond | Verify actuator power, wiring, controller demand and mechanical travel. |
| Dampers operate backwards | Check the motor rotation settings and damper orientation. |
| Incorrect minimum outside air | Verify the minimum opening parameter and actual damper operation. |
| Economiser unavailable in suitable conditions | Check the outside-air reading, configuration, free-cooling logic and active alarms. |
