Rooftop Package Unit Installation and Safety

Single Skin RAQ / PREMIUM | R410A and R454B

Qualified personnel only
Installation, lifting, electrical connection and refrigerant work must be undertaken by appropriately qualified personnel. Read the complete installation manual and the refrigerant-specific safety instructions before commencing work. Isolate all electrical supplies before opening electrical compartments.

1. Identify the Refrigerant

RefrigerantClassificationKey Requirement
R410AA1 – Non-flammableObserve electrical, pressure, refrigerant-handling and general installation safety requirements.
R454BA2L – Lower flammabilityAdditional installation, conditioned-space area, ignition-source, ventilation and servicing precautions apply.

Confirm the refrigerant on the equipment nameplate. Never assume that two units with the same capacity designation use the same refrigerant or have the same factory charge.

2. Delivery and Pre-Installation Inspection

  1. Inspect the package for damage before accepting delivery.
  2. Compare the delivered equipment against the order and packaging identification plate.
  3. Confirm the full model number, serial number, dimensions, weight and factory-fitted options.
  4. Confirm that the installation, electrical and refrigerant documentation is available.
  5. Inspect loose accessories for completeness and damage.
  6. Confirm that the roof, platform or support structure has been approved for the installed operating weight and loading conditions.

3. Lifting and Handling

The supplied rooftop lifting instructions identify four designated lifting locations. Weight distribution may not be equal across all four points.

Lifting requirements
  • Use the four designated lifting positions.
  • Do not assume an equal load at every lifting point.
  • Select certified lifting equipment suitable for the actual unit weight and load distribution.
  • Use suitable spreaders, bars or lifting arrangements to prevent cabinet damage.
  • Close and latch all section doors before lifting.
  • Ensure that lifting slings cannot slide or damage cabinet panels.
  • Do not lift the unit using refrigerant piping, components or cabinet panels.

The installation manual also describes lifting bars through designated base openings, fork handling and maximum inclination requirements. The approved rigging method must be confirmed against the supplied lifting drawing and actual machine configuration.

4. Installation Position and Clearances

  • Install the unit outdoors on a firm, level and suitable support structure.
  • Ensure that all designated support points are fully supported.
  • Maintain adequate access for maintenance, electrical work, filter replacement and component removal.
  • Keep condenser air inlets and discharge paths unobstructed.
  • Avoid locations that encourage hot discharge-air recirculation.
  • Consider wind direction, nearby buildings, noise-sensitive areas and drainage.
  • Do not install underneath a roof, canopy or covering that obstructs the required outdoor airflow.
  • Provide suitable drainage for cooling condensate and heat-pump defrost water.
Published Reference Clearances
L1 / L21000 mm
W1 / W21000 mm

These are the clearance dimensions shown in the supplied installation manual. Refer to the manual diagram for the precise side identification. Additional clearance may be required for safe access, nearby equipment, airflow or applicable regulations.

5. Ductwork and Drainage

  • Size ductwork according to the required airflow and available external static pressure.
  • Use appropriately sized and supported supply and return duct connections.
  • Provide access for filters and future servicing.
  • Keep airflow paths unobstructed.
  • Provide an appropriate condensate trap for each drain connection.
  • Follow the trap-height instructions on the adhesive label fitted to the unit.
  • Support the drain fitting when tightening external pipework to avoid twisting the drain pan connection.
  • Keep drains and collection pans clean and inspect them periodically.

6. Additional R454B Installation Safety

R454B is an A2L refrigerant. The dedicated R454B safety instructions must be followed in full. General R410A installation instructions are not a substitute for R454B safety requirements.

Minimum conditioned-space area

The supplied R454B safety guide specifies the following calculation for the minimum total conditioned-space area:

Minimum area (m²) = Refrigerant charge (kg) / 0.3377

Examples from the supplied R454B table:

  • 7 kg charge: approximately 20.73 m².
  • 12 kg charge: approximately 35.53 m².
  • 26 kg charge: approximately 76.99 m².
  • 38 kg charge: approximately 112.53 m².

This is a manufacturer-published reference requirement, not a complete design assessment. Verify the actual charge, serving space, duct arrangements and applicable AS/NZS 5149 requirements before installation.

R454B ductwork and ignition-source precautions

  • Supply and return air must be directly ducted to the conditioned space.
  • Do not use an open false-ceiling space as a return-air duct.
  • Do not locate potential ignition sources within connected ductwork.
  • Keep ventilation openings clear.
  • Control ignition sources when opening the refrigerant circuit.
  • Use refrigerant-appropriate leak-detection, servicing and recovery equipment.
  • Comply with the full safety requirements for leak detection, ventilation, repairs, recovery and charging.

7. Electrical Installation

  1. Confirm supply voltage, protection requirements and cable sizing against the nameplate and model-specific electrical drawing.
  2. Isolate and verify the absence of electrical supply before opening terminals or working on circuits.
  3. Use the designated cable-entry points and suitable cable glands.
  4. Keep control and power wiring appropriately segregated.
  5. Complete protective earthing in accordance with applicable wiring regulations.
  6. Verify phase supply, terminations and protection before energising the unit.
  7. Secure cabling against mechanical damage, heat and sharp edges.
  8. Reinstate all electrical covers and access panels.
