Group Connection for Split & Multi Split Models
Remote controller group wiring, cable sizing and multi-split restrictions
Reference: Product News RAC-16-001 | Issued 19 February 2016
This bulletin confirms that group connection of remote controllers is permitted on the applicable split and multi-split models listed below, subject to the wiring, addressing and refrigerant-system requirements in this article.
Important: Group connection on a multi-split system is permitted only within the same refrigerant system. Do not connect the remote-controller group wiring across separate refrigerant systems.
1. Applicable systems
| System type | Applicable products |
|---|---|
| Split models | Wall mounted LT / LU / LM / LF series and floor type models listed in the bulletin appendix. |
| Multi-split models | 2-room, 3-room, 4-room and 8-room multi type systems, subject to the restrictions in Section 5. |
| Production date | Models produced in 2013 or later are applicable. |
| Cassette and ducted models | Group connection was already available for cassette and duct models when this bulletin was issued. |
2. Remote controller wiring requirements
Electrical work: Installation must comply with applicable national wiring regulations and must be carried out by authorised personnel.
The maximum total remote-controller cable length for the wall-mounted and floor-type group connection is 300 m (984 ft). Cable cross-section must increase when the total length exceeds 100 m.
| Total remote controller cable length | Required cable cross-section |
|---|---|
| 100 m (328 ft) or less | 0.3-0.8 mm² (AWG 18-22) |
| 100-200 m (328-656 ft) | 0.5-0.8 mm² (AWG 18-20) |
| 200-300 m (656-984 ft) | 0.8 mm² (AWG 18) |
Crimp terminal specification
The bulletin specifies the following crimping terminal and insulation cap, or an equivalent part that fulfils the application:
| Manufacturer | J.S.T. MFG. CO., LTD |
| Part number | CE2 (CE-230V) |
| Conductor material / finish | Oxygen-free copper, tin coated |
| Insulating material | UL94-0 |
| Contact resistance | 1.2 mΩ or less |
| Tension strength | 40 N or more |
| Ratchet hand tool | YS-1614 |
3. Group wiring method
Typical group connection
| Indoor unit 1 | ↔ | Indoor unit 2 | ↔ | Other indoor units / wired remote controller |
Remote controller group wiring is interconnected between the applicable indoor units and controller.
- A communication kit is required for compact wall-mounted types.
- The wiring example in the bulletin uses a 2-wire connector, Service Part No. 9705932012.
- When using the wall-mounted communication kit, store the crimp terminals inside the communication kit.
- Conceal group-connection wiring inside the wall or protect it using trunking with a thickness of 1 mm or more.
- Bundle the wiring with a cable tie so external force is not applied to the crimp terminals. The splice position must provide 10 N or greater tensile strength.
4. Wireless remote controller RC addressing
For group connection using wireless remote controllers, set an individual RC address through the indoor-unit function setting procedure.
| Setting | Function number | Setting value |
|---|---|---|
| RC (Remote Controller) address | 00 | 00-15 (Factory setting: 00) |
| 1 | Enter the wireless remote controller Function Setting mode. Refer to the applicable indoor-unit installation manual for the exact entry procedure. |
| 2 | Select Function Number 00. |
| 3 | Set the required RC address from 00 to 15. |
A temporary error may be displayed immediately after power is turned on while the group-connection settings are incomplete. The bulletin states that this error will clear automatically once the subsequent function setting is completed.
5. Multi-split group connection rules
| Rule | Requirement |
|---|---|
| A | Apply the wall-mounted / floor-type wiring requirements in Sections 2 and 3. |
| B | Group connection is allowed only within the same refrigerant system. |
| C | DO NOT bridge the remote-controller group wiring between separate refrigerant systems. |
| D | Group connection is permitted on an 8-room multi system, but the UTY-DMM*M home controller cannot be connected at the same time. |
Allowed - same refrigerant system
Indoor 1 ↔ Indoor 2 ↔ Wired RC
All indoor units are connected to the same outdoor refrigerant system.
Not allowed - separate refrigerant systems
System A indoor ✖ System B indoor
Do not interconnect the remote-controller group wiring across different refrigerant systems.
6. Commissioning checklist
| ✓ | Confirm the indoor model is covered by this bulletin and was produced in 2013 or later. |
| ✓ | Confirm total remote-controller cable length does not exceed 300 m and cable size matches the total length. |
| ✓ | Confirm crimp joints are insulated, protected from strain and secured to the specified tensile requirement. |
| ✓ | For compact wall-mounted models, confirm the required communication kit is fitted. |
| ✓ | Where wireless remote controllers are used, confirm RC addresses are correctly assigned using Function 00. |
| ✓ | For multi-split systems, confirm all grouped indoor units are on the same refrigerant system. |
| ✓ | On an 8-room multi system, confirm a UTY-DMM*M home controller is not being used simultaneously with the group connection. |
7. Applicable model list from RAC-16-001
The original bulletin appendix lists the following 141 model references. The 2013-or-later production requirement still applies.
