Adding Wi-Fi Control to Older Infrared-Controlled Air Conditioners
A simple retrofit option for older ASTG and AST wall-mounted split systems
For systems that are operated by a standard handheld infrared remote controller
Recommended retrofit approach: If an older wall-mounted split system does not have built-in Wi-Fi and is controlled by an infrared handheld remote, the easiest retrofit solution we have found is to use a third-party Sensibo smart air-conditioning controller / IR blaster.

1. Which air conditioners does this apply to?
This solution is intended for older GENERAL / Fujitsu wall-mounted split systems that use a handheld infrared (IR) remote controller, including:

Check the control type first: This article applies where the air conditioner can be operated by a normal handheld IR remote. It is not intended as a universal solution for products that are controlled only by a wired controller or require a dedicated communication accessory.
2. How does a Sensibo controller add Wi-Fi?
A Sensibo controller does not connect to the air conditioner's internal PCB. Instead, it acts as a Wi-Fi-connected infrared remote control.

Because it is an external IR controller, this can be a useful option where a genuine Wi-Fi accessory is no longer available, was never offered for the model, or would require more extensive modification.
3. Before purchasing
Before buying an aftermarket IR controller, check the following:
- The air conditioner can currently be operated by its normal handheld infrared remote controller.
- The indoor unit's IR receiver is working correctly.
- There is a suitable location near the indoor unit where the Sensibo device can send infrared signals to the air conditioner.
- Wi-Fi coverage is available at the proposed controller location.
- The specific air-conditioner model is supported by the current Sensibo product being purchased. Compatibility should be confirmed with Sensibo or the retailer before purchase.
Where to purchase: Sensibo controllers are widely available online and through many electronics, smart-home and air-conditioning retailers. Purchase through a reputable retailer and confirm compatibility before ordering.
4. Typical setup process
- Confirm the original remote works. Test the air conditioner using the existing handheld IR remote before installing any third-party controller.
- Position the Sensibo controller. Install it where it can reliably send infrared commands to the indoor unit. Avoid placing it behind furniture or inside a cupboard.
- Connect the Sensibo device to power and Wi-Fi. Follow the current Sensibo installation instructions supplied with the product.
- Add the air conditioner in the Sensibo app. Select the relevant brand/model information and follow the app's setup process.
- Test the main functions. Confirm On/Off, operating mode, temperature and fan commands operate the air conditioner correctly.
- Retain the original remote. Keep the original infrared remote available for normal operation and troubleshooting.
5. Important limitations
- This is not a genuine GENERAL AIRSTAGE Wi-Fi interface. It controls the unit externally by infrared.
- Compatibility can vary between historical models and remote-control code sets. Confirm support before purchase.
- Available app features, smart-home integrations and cloud services are controlled by Sensibo and may change over time.
- The Sensibo device does not provide GENERAL AIRSTAGE service diagnostics or direct access to the indoor unit's control PCB.
- Technical support, warranty and replacement of the Sensibo product are the responsibility of Sensibo or the supplying retailer.

If you have an older ASTG or AST wall-mounted split system that still operates from a handheld infrared remote, an aftermarket Sensibo IR controller is generally the simplest way to add app-based Wi-Fi control without modifying the air conditioner.
