Purpose

This solution explains how to update the firmware on the X-Gate Multigateway.

Firmware files may vary depending on the project, product version, or service instruction. Always use the correct firmware file supplied by Technical Support, Service, Engineering, or the relevant project documentation.

Attach the applicable firmware file or files to this Freshdesk solution article so technicians can download the required version directly.

Before You Begin

Before updating the firmware, confirm the following:

  • The correct firmware file has been supplied.
  • The Multigateway is powered and operational.
  • The PC can access the Multigateway web interface.
  • The user has the appropriate access level to perform firmware updates.
  • A backup of the current configuration has been taken where required.

Important: Installing the wrong firmware may affect gateway operation. Confirm the correct firmware version before proceeding.

Firmware Update Options

The X-Gate Multigateway firmware can be updated using either:

  1. The web interface
  2. A USB memory stick

The preferred method is normally the web interface, unless the gateway cannot be accessed through a browser.

Option 1: Update Firmware Using the Web Interface

Steps

  1. Connect to the Multigateway using a web browser.
  2. Log in with the appropriate username and password.
  3. Select the Multigateway / MGTW node.
  4. Go to Settings.
  5. Locate the Update section.
  6. Select Choose File or Select File.
  7. Browse to the firmware file downloaded from this Freshdesk article.
  8. Select the required firmware file.
  9. Select Update.
  10. Wait for the update process to complete.
  11. Allow the Multigateway to restart.
  12. Log back in and confirm the firmware version.

Note: When updating through the web interface, the firmware file may have a version-specific file name.

Option 2: Update Firmware Using USB

Use this method if the web interface cannot be accessed or if instructed by Technical Support.

USB Requirements

  • USB memory stick formatted as FAT or FAT32
  • Correct firmware file
  • Firmware file renamed exactly as:
mgtw.bin

Steps

  1. Download the required firmware file from this Freshdesk article.
  2. Format the USB stick as FAT or FAT32.
  3. Copy the firmware file to the root folder of the USB stick.
  4. Rename the firmware file exactly:
mgtw.bin
  1. Insert the USB stick into the Multigateway USB port.
  2. Power cycle the Multigateway.
  3. Wait several minutes for the firmware update to complete.
  4. Remove the USB stick.
  5. Reconnect to the Multigateway web interface.
  6. Confirm the firmware version.

Important: For USB firmware updates, the file must be named mgtw.bin. Do not place it inside a folder.

Confirm Firmware Version After Update

After the update is complete:

  1. Log in to the Multigateway web interface.
  2. Go to Settings or the device information page.
  3. Confirm the displayed firmware version matches the intended version.
  4. Check gateway communication and system operation.

Recommended Attachment Naming

When attaching firmware files to this Freshdesk solution, use a clear naming structure.

Example:

X-Gate_Multigateway_Firmware_v3.xx.bin

or

mgtw_v3.xx_projectname.bin

For USB updates, remind the technician to rename the selected file to:

mgtw.bin

before copying it to the USB stick.

Technician Notes

  • Do not interrupt power during the firmware update.
  • Do not remove the USB stick until the update has completed.
  • Confirm the correct firmware version before updating.
  • If the gateway becomes inaccessible after the update, use the USB method to read the current network configuration.
  • If required, restore the previous configuration from backup after the firmware update.

Troubleshooting

Firmware update does not start from USB

Check the following:

  • USB stick is formatted as FAT or FAT32.
  • Firmware file is in the root folder.
  • File is named exactly mgtw.bin.
  • Gateway has been power cycled after inserting the USB stick.

Cannot access the web interface after update

Check the following:

  • PC is on the same IP range as the gateway.
  • Ethernet cable is connected correctly.
  • Gateway IP address has not changed.
  • Use node_info.txt on a USB stick to read the current network configuration.

Incorrect firmware was installed

Contact Technical Support before making further changes. A firmware rollback may require a specific file or recovery procedure.
