Defrost Mode - What It Is and How It Works

Defrost mode is a normal automatic function used by reverse-cycle air conditioners and heat pumps, including GENERAL AIRSTAGE systems, to remove frost or ice from the outdoor coil during heating operation.

What is Defrost Mode?

When an air conditioner operates in heating mode, the outdoor coil becomes very cold as it absorbs heat from the outside air. In low-temperature and high-humidity conditions, moisture can condense and freeze on the outdoor coil.

As frost builds up, airflow through the coil reduces and the system becomes less effective at absorbing heat. Defrost mode temporarily removes this frost so normal heating performance can resume.

How Defrost Mode Works

  2. The refrigerant cycle temporarily reverses so hot refrigerant can warm the outdoor coil.
  3. The indoor fan may slow or stop to avoid blowing cold air into the room.
  4. Frost and ice on the outdoor coil melt away.
  5. Once defrost is complete, the system automatically returns to heating operation.
Typical duration: A defrost cycle will commonly last around 5 to 15 minutes, depending on operating conditions and the model.

What You May Notice During Defrost

  • Heating output temporarily stops.
  • The indoor fan may slow down or stop.
  • The outdoor fan may stop during parts of the defrost sequence.
  • Water may drain from the outdoor unit as frost melts.
  • Steam or vapour may be visible around the outdoor unit. This can be normal during defrost.

Indication on Wall Controllers

Wired wall controllers may display a defrost indication while the cycle is active. The exact icon or message varies by controller model.

The indication confirms that the system is temporarily performing a normal defrost operation rather than necessarily indicating a fault.

Indoor Unit LED Indicators

High-wall and other indoor units without a wired wall controller may use the operation and timer LEDs to indicate system status during defrost.

  • Operation LED: may remain illuminated or blink while the system is in a temporary non-heating state.
  • Timer LED: may blink in a model-specific pattern.
Important: LED behaviour is model-specific. Always refer to the operating or service manual for the applicable model before treating a flashing indication as an error code.

When Further Investigation May Be Required

Defrost is normal during heating operation. However, further inspection may be warranted where:

  • Defrost appears to continue for an unusually long period.
  • The system repeatedly enters defrost with very little heating operation between cycles.
  • The outdoor coil remains heavily iced after the cycle finishes.
  • Heating does not resume normally after defrost.
  • A confirmed error code is displayed after the cycle.

Potential causes can include outdoor coil sensor issues, airflow restrictions, operating-condition problems, or refrigerant-system faults. Diagnosis should be carried out by a qualified technician.
