Do Air Conditioners Need Refrigerant Recharging?

Quick answer: An air conditioner is a sealed refrigeration system. If it has been installed correctly and remains leak-free, the refrigerant circulates within the system and does not get "used up" during normal operation.

Why refrigerant does not need regular replacement

Refrigerant continuously circulates between the indoor and outdoor units as the air conditioner operates. It changes pressure and state as part of the refrigeration cycle, but under normal conditions it remains contained within the pipework, coils and components of the system.

Unlike fuel, oil or another consumable, refrigerant does not become stale, expire or get consumed simply because the air conditioner has been operating for a long period.

In practical terms: If a technician determines that an air conditioner is low on refrigerant, the system should be checked for the reason the refrigerant has been lost rather than simply being topped up.

When would an air conditioner need refrigerant added?

Refrigerant normally only needs to be added when there has been a loss from the system or where refrigerant charge is being correctly adjusted as part of installation or repair work.

Why simply "topping up the gas" is not the solution

If refrigerant has escaped, adding more refrigerant without finding and correcting the cause does not address the underlying problem. The system may lose refrigerant again, resulting in reduced performance and another service call.

A qualified refrigeration technician should inspect the system, identify whether a leak is present, repair the fault where required, and then restore the correct refrigerant charge in accordance with the applicable service procedures.

Low performance does not always mean low refrigerant
