Outdoor Unit Drainage and Water Drip Explanation

Understanding normal condensate drainage and available drain-kit components
For residential outdoor air-conditioning units
Clear water dripping from beneath an outdoor unit can be a normal part of operation, particularly during heating and defrost cycles. The water can be redirected to a suitable discharge point by fitting the appropriate outdoor-unit drain components.

1. Why water may drip from the outdoor unit

During heating operation, moisture in the outside air can condense on the outdoor heat exchanger. In cold or humid conditions, frost may also form and the system will periodically enter a defrost cycle. The melted frost and condensation collect in the outdoor unit base and discharge through the drainage openings underneath.

Where no drain connection is fitted, this clear water will drip directly onto the surface below. This is generally normal and does not, by itself, indicate an air-conditioning fault.

Further investigation is required if the liquid is oily, coloured, has an unusual odour, is coming from electrical components, or continues when the unit has not been operating. A licensed air-conditioning technician should inspect the system in these circumstances.

2. Recommended drain components

The following genuine Fujitsu components can be used, where compatible with the outdoor-unit model, to provide controlled drainage.

PartDescriptionPart numberFunction
Elbow fittingOutdoor drain-kit elbow9303029022Fits to the outdoor unit drain outlet and provides a connection point for a suitable drain hose or pipe.
Drain-hole capOutdoor unit drain-hole cap313166024302Closes unused base-pan drain openings so water is directed toward the selected drain outlet.

Part number 313166024302
Compatibility note: Confirm the outdoor-unit model and parts listing before ordering or installing these components. Drain arrangements can vary between models.

3. Action for installers or service technicians

1Confirm the discharge is clear condensate water and that there are no signs of refrigerant oil, corrosion or another source of leakage.
2Confirm that the selected drain elbow and caps are suitable for the outdoor-unit model.
3Fit elbow 9303029022 to the nominated drain outlet and connect a suitable drain hose or pipe.
4Fit drain-hole caps 313166024302 to the remaining openings where required by the installation instructions.
5Route the drain continuously downhill to an approved discharge point, away from walkways, building surfaces and areas where water may create a slip or ice hazard.
6Test the drain arrangement and confirm that water can discharge freely without backing up into the outdoor unit.

4. Customer advice

Water dripping from the outdoor unit is often normal. It is commonly condensation or melted frost produced during heating and defrost operation.

A drain kit can be installed to redirect this water to a more suitable location.

Where the water is causing a nuisance, contact the original installer or a licensed air-conditioning technician to assess the site and install a suitable drainage arrangement.
