Overview

General does not sell or manufacture a dedicated inverter checker tool.

General does offer the UTY-ASSXZ1 diagnostic tool, which provides service and communication diagnostic functions on compatible General inverter systems.


Important: The UTY-ASSXZ1 is not a direct replacement for an inverter phase checker. Technicians requiring direct compressor output or inverter phase verification may need to use an appropriate third-party testing tool.

1. General Diagnostic Tool

  • Checking inverter output signals

Inverter Output Test Procedure

Isolate the power supply to the air conditioning system.

Wait a minimum of three minutes to allow the inverter capacitors to discharge.

Disconnect the compressor leads from the inverter control board.

Connect the inverter checker leads to the corresponding compressor output terminals, normally identified as R, Y and B or U, V and W.

Testing limitation: Indicator results should be considered together with the unit's service data, error history, compressor winding resistance, insulation resistance and other electrical checks. An inverter checker result alone may not confirm the complete condition of the inverter board or compressor.

Communication Data Flow Test

The checker may also be used to monitor communication between the indoor and outdoor control boards.

  1. Isolate the power supply before connecting the checker.
  2. Connect the checker probes to the applicable indoor-to-outdoor communication terminals in accordance with the checker manufacturer's instructions.
  3. Restore power and operate the system.
  4. Observe the communication LEDs.

3. Safety Precautions

Electrical Safety Warning

Inverter systems contain high DC voltages that may remain present after the power supply has been isolated. Testing must only be performed by appropriately licensed and qualified technicians.

Isolate power before connection.
Never connect or disconnect inverter checker leads while the system is energised.
Allow capacitor discharge time.
Wait at least three minutes, or the period specified in the applicable service manual, before handling the inverter circuit.
Confirm terminal identification.
Check the wiring diagram before connecting the tester. Do not assume terminal labels or voltages are the same across all models.
Keep the equipment dry.
Do not use the inverter checker in wet, damp or otherwise unsafe environments.
Temporary diagnostic use only.
The inverter checker must not remain permanently connected to the air conditioning system.
