This article explains how to use the JIIIL refrigerant charge calculation shown in the service calculator.

Calculation Method

Step 1 - Select the Outdoor Unit

Select the applicable outdoor unit model in the calculator.

The calculator then provides the corresponding Factory Charge. This becomes Section A of the calculation.

Step 2 - Enter Additional Pipe Length

Enter the applicable pipe length in metres for each pipe size used in the system.

Add the calculated refrigerant quantity for all three pipe sizes. This becomes Section B.

Step 3 - Calculate Total Refrigerant Charge

Add the factory charge and the additional pipe charge:

Total Refrigerant Charge (kg) = Factory Charge (A) + Total Additional Pipe Charge (B)

Worked Example

The following example demonstrates the calculation method only.

  • Factory charge (A): 7.00 kg
  • 1/4 in. pipe length: 20 m
  • 3/8 in. pipe length: 25 m
  • 1/2 in. pipe length: 10 m

1/4 in. pipe charge:
20 m x 0.021 kg/m = 0.42 kg

3/8 in. pipe charge:
25 m x 0.058 kg/m = 1.45 kg

1/2 in. pipe charge:
10 m x 0.114 kg/m = 1.14 kg

Total additional pipe charge (B):
0.42 kg + 1.45 kg + 1.14 kg = 3.01 kg

Total system refrigerant charge:
7.00 kg + 3.01 kg = 10.01 kg

Maximum System Charge

Maximum system charge shown in the calculator: 20 kg.

Always compare the final calculated refrigerant quantity with the maximum system charge shown by the calculator for the selected system.

Technician Checklist

  1. Select the correct outdoor unit model.
  2. Confirm the factory charge displayed by the calculator.
  3. Measure the applicable 1/4 in., 3/8 in. and 1/2 in. pipe lengths.
  4. Calculate the additional charge using the correct kg/m rate for each pipe size.
  5. Add all additional pipe charges together.
  6. Add the additional charge to the factory charge.
  7. Confirm the final system charge does not exceed the maximum shown in the calculator.
  8. Record the final refrigerant charge on the commissioning documentation.
