JIIS Choke Coil - Noise Diagnosis
Check the choke coil before diagnosing the compressor as the source of abnormal operating noise
Applies to JIIS systems where an abnormal humming, buzzing or vibration-type noise appears to be coming from the outdoor unit.
Technical alert: Two instances have been reported in the UK where noise from a JIIS system was initially suspected to be caused by the compressor. On closer inspection, the noise was found to be originating from the choke coil.
1. Issue
An abnormal operating noise may be heard from the outdoor unit on a JIIS system. Because of the location and character of the noise, it may initially appear that the compressor is responsible.
Before diagnosing the compressor as faulty, the choke coil should also be checked as a possible source of the noise.

Important: Do not replace or condemn the compressor solely because the noise appears to be coming from the compressor area. Confirm the actual noise source first.
3. What to Check
- Operate the system under the condition in which the noise is present. Confirm that the reported noise can be reproduced.
- Identify the source of the noise. Listen carefully around the compressor and choke coil areas rather than assuming the compressor is responsible.
- Compare the components directly. Determine whether the audible noise or vibration is strongest at the choke coil.
- Confirm before condemning the compressor. If the choke coil is clearly emitting the noise, record this finding as part of the diagnosis.
Diagnostic tip: Noise and vibration can transmit through the outdoor unit structure, making the apparent source different from the component actually generating the sound. Take time to localise the noise at the component level.
4. Service Action
If a JIIS system is reported as having an abnormal compressor-type noise:
- Do not assume the compressor is faulty based on noise alone.
- Include the choke coil in the noise investigation.
- Confirm which component is actually emitting the noise before ordering parts or carrying out major component replacement.
- Document the confirmed noise source in the service report.
