Use of EEPROM Software Writer

Electrical safety: This task requires work around energised electrical equipment during part of the procedure. Only suitably qualified refrigeration / air conditioning personnel, or apprentices working under appropriate supervision, are authorised to perform this work.

Purpose

This procedure applies to the use of EEPROM software writers for controller PCBs.

Required Equipment and PPE

Safe Work Sequence

  1. Isolate the power supply to the air conditioner.
  2. Remove the required panel from the outdoor unit.
  3. Confirm the electrical test equipment is operating correctly by testing it on a known power supply.
  4. Where possible, verify voltage between:
    • Earth and Active
    • Earth and Neutral
    • Neutral and Active
  5. Connect the EEPROM writer to the controller PCB as required.
  6. Ensure the EEPROM writer remains inside its enclosure and is positioned securely.
  7. Re-apply power to the air conditioner and follow the applicable EEPROM programming procedure.
  8. When programming is complete, isolate the power supply again.
  9. Wait until DC voltage has discharged and check voltage as required.
  10. Disconnect and remove the EEPROM writer from the controller PCB.
  11. Re-apply power to the system.
  12. Start and test the air conditioner to confirm correct operation.
  13. Reinstall all panels as required.
Critical check: Always prove the meter on a known power source before relying on it to verify isolation.

Safe Working Instructions

  • Make the work area safe and install pedestrian barricades where required.
  • Only a certified refrigeration / air conditioning tradesperson, or an apprentice working under the supervision of a qualified person, is authorised to perform this task.
  • Always test meters on a known power source between the relevant Active, Neutral and Earth test points before use.

Nearby Work and Other Personnel

The original SWP identifies no specific nearby-work risk, but notes that other staff, visitors and contractors may be present in the immediate work area.

Controls include:

  • Appropriate PPE
  • On-the-job training
  • Verbal warning to staff, visitors or contractors entering the immediate work area
Important: Do not connect or disconnect the EEPROM writer unless the applicable procedure permits it and the required electrical isolation steps have been completed. Always allow stored DC voltage to discharge before removing the writer from the controller PCB.
